Mountainside
Tucked along the edge of the Watchung Mountains, Mountainside is a small, peaceful borough known for its wooded streets, spacious lots, and close-knit community feel. Homes include classic Colonials, Cape Cods, ranches, and split-levels, along with impressive custom homes set among mature trees. With a population of about 7,000, Mountainside offers a quiet, private setting while keeping shopping, dining, and major highways just minutes away.
Incorporated in 1895, Mountainside has held on to the natural beauty that first drew settlers to the area. A large portion of the Watchung Reservation, Union County’s largest park, lies within its borders, giving residents miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, scenic lakes, and the popular Trailside Nature and Science Center right in their own backyard.
Mountainside’s local school district serves students through eighth grade at Beechwood and Deerfield Schools, and high school students attend the highly regarded Governor Livingston High School in neighboring Berkeley Heights. The borough is also home to Children’s Specialized Hospital, while the community pool, youth sports programs, and Echo Lake Park give families plenty to enjoy all year long.
Route 22 runs through town and Route 78 is close by, while train stations in nearby Westfield, Summit, and Berkeley Heights make commuting to New York City easy. With its natural beauty, excellent schools, and small-town charm, Mountainside is a hidden gem that families are proud to call home!
